Most, if not all of us, are familiar with the annual event known as the Race of Champions. Most, if not all of us, know that competitors are pooled from a wide range of motorsport disciplines, from Stadium Truck racing to NASCAR and even MotoGP. But what some of us might not know is that the Race of Champions has is foundations in rally. In fact, the event was initially conceived as a shootout between the best international rally stars.
This isn't so evident today; as more and more drivers crave a slice of the ROC action, the competition becomes more and more diverse. But take a look back to 1989, the first year the ROC was run on a parallel circuit, and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
